How to Avoid a DUI this Memorial Day

For many, Memorial Day marks the beginning of good weather, summer vacations, and backyard barbecues. Unfortunately, Memorial Day has a bad reputation for being one of the holidays with the most drunk drivers on the road. As the nation takes a long weekend to celebrate, the temptation to consume one too many drinks is high. According to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Memorial Day has an average of 312 fatal accidents per year (measured 2011-2015). Many of these are fueled by drunk driving.

Tips to Avoid an Arrest

In response to these statistics, law enforcement typically tightens up on spotting and charging drunk drivers. In many cases, these charges are unfounded or over-penalized.

Here are several things you can do to minimize your chances of an arrest over the weekend:

  • Choose a Designated Driver: Find a friend or family member who is willing to stay away from alcoholic beverages and drive you home. Pay them back with free food or an IOU for future holidays.
  • Download a Rideshare App: Whether you use Uber, Lyft, or a local rideshare program, it’s possible to get a sober ride even if you couldn’t find a designated driver.
  • Stay the Night: Traveling to a friend’s house? Consider asking the host if you could stay the night. Or, look for hotels nearby where you can spend the weekend.
  • Pace Yourself: While results vary, the average person takes about one to one and a half hours to process a can of beer or a shot of hard liquor. Take your time, eat lots of food, and stop yourself well before you need to go home.

At the end of the night, if you still find yourself in a situation with law enforcement, remember to be respectful, to say as little as possible, and to get in touch with a defense lawyer as soon as possible.
