How to Reinstate Your Suspended Driver's License

Driving - reinstate your license

Your driver’s license can be suspended for many reasons. Whether you were convicted of DUI, accumulated too many points on your driving record, or had your license suspended for another reason, you will not be able to drive anywhere until you meet the requirements for having your license reinstated. If you need to drive to your place of employment or to school or have any other pressing circumstances that require that you drive, you will have to request a DMV hearing to contest your suspension. You may also be able to see if you are eligible for a restricted or temporary license.

If you are ineligible for a restricted license and were not granted a DMV hearing, you must wait out the suspension until you have met all the criteria for having your license reinstated.

Requirements & Fees for Reinstating an Alaska Driver’s License

First, you must wait until the period of suspension is over before applying for a new driver’s license. Typically, a reinstatement fee for a first license suspension (not DUI-related) is $100. If your first license suspension is DUI-related, the cost jumps to $200. For subsequent suspensions, the cost only increases.

At the DMV office, you must do the following:

  • Complete an Alaska driver’s license application
  • Pass the written, vision, and road tests
  • Submit proof of insurance
  • Bring identification such as your birth certificate, ID card, or U.S. passport
  • Submit proof of completion of an alcohol treatment program if needed
  • Install an ignition interlock device if needed
  • Meet any other DMV requirements
  • Pay the fees related to obtaining your reinstated license

Your local Alaska DMV office will have more details on what you need to bring and submit in order to regain your driving privileges.
